America's First Great Place

People have been enjoying the restorative benefits of the Adirondacks for nearly 150 years. You are invited to visit this extraordinary part of the world for yourself, and experience the spectacular beauty, celebrated history and outdoor recreational paradise that is Forever Adirondack

To help you plan your trip, we've divided the area into four unique regions, each with a different view of the Adirondacks.

Lake Placid/High Peaks Region | Lake Champlain Region
Schroon Lake Region | Whiteface Region

Nestled in the spectacular Adirondack mountains, Lake Placid blends a rich Olympic history, a quaint village perfect for both relaxation and renewal, and outstanding natural resources where superb golf, fishing, hiking and skiing await. The canoeing/kayaking is memorable, with the many rivers, lakes and ponds including the St. Regis Canoe Area, and cultural events are centered at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts.

Surrounded by two of the East’s most stunning mountain ranges, Lake Champlain comprises all of Essex County’s eastern border. And in addition to the beautiful coastline, there’s a wealth of historic sites, nationally-known fishing opportunities, cozy lakeside villages and shops, great golf, biking, hiking, snowmobiling and birdwatching

With friendly, charming Schroon Lake
as its centerpiece, the region also offers some of the most remote spots in the Adirondacks, such as the Pharaoh Lakes and Santanoni areas. Fishing is exceptional, hunting is great, canoeing/kayaking plentiful, along with the many hiking opportunities, cultural activities and places to sit back, relax and soak in all the Adirondacks’ splendor.

The Whiteface Region is home to a
pair of landmarks of equal fame:
Whiteface Mountain, the East’s No. 1 ski resort, and the legendary
West Branch of the Ausable River, where flyfishermen make annual pilgrimages. Throw in natural wonders like High Falls Gorge, an attraction like Santa’s Workshop, and a summer filled with cultural events and entertainment, and great outdoor sports like hiking and biking, and the Whiteface Region is a mandatory stop when you visit Essex County.
